There are a number of equestrian subdivisions in the Jamestown area. It is not necessary to live in one of these but you would be wise to familiarize yourself with the area, know where the various trailheads are and determine whether a property you are considering is on a trail network, or if you will have to trailer in order to ride. The better-known subdivisions are the older ones. Spruce Creek is about 15 miles from Jamestown and, while it is sometimes inconvenient for the purposes of doing errands, it has trails that connect directly with the hundreds of miles of trails in Big South Fork. There is a pavilion where monthly potluck suppers are held, so it is easy to get to know people. The Spruce Creek Trail Association has a very informative newsletter and you'll find copies on the website. Here's a link to the Spruce Creek website: http://www.sprucecreektrails.com There are other equestrian communities as well, each with its own unique characteristics. If you want to ride and scope out the area, Bandy Creek Horse Campground is the concession within Big South Fork National Park itself. It has everything you need and is beautifully run. Here's the link:http://www.nps.gov/biso/planyourvisit/bandycreekcampground.htm By the way, if you are planning a trip here and want to read through the reviews of various horse campgrounds and other lodging, go to http://www.horsetraildirectory.com and see what others have had to say. It could be very enlightening and might prevent an unfortunate experience. |
